Tropical Storm Maliksi not expected to affect Taiwan

TAIPEI--A tropical storm that formed over the western Pacific Ocean Monday afternoon will not affect Taiwan even though it is currently headed toward the island, the Central Weather Bureau forecast Monday.

Tropical Storm Maliksi was centered 2,700 kilometers east southeast off the coast of Hualien County at 2 p.m. and was moving in a west-northwest direction at a speed of 18 kilometers per hour, the bureau said.

The bureau predicted that the storm will turn north toward Japan in the next few days when it is still 2,000 km from Taiwan and consequently will not affect the island, bureau forecasters said.

Meanwhile, a tropical depression, which is hovering over waters near the Paracel and Macclesfield Islands in the South China Sea, will likely develop into a tropical storm but will head west and not approach Taiwan, according to the weather bureau.
