Event reminds all that breast cancer prevention is best form of treatment

The China Post news staff--Taipei Medical University Hospital (TMUH, 臺北醫學大學附設醫院) yesterday held a breast cancer prevention event in Taipei's Xinyi District Vieshow Plaza, providing valuable information to raise public awareness.

The event was held under the slogan "Chest Protection 110, 40 Beginning" (護胸 101, 40 beginning) to emphasize the importance of taking action, such as going for annual breast cancer checkups. Such measures are especially important for those aged 40 and over, who should undergo annual mammograms, or talk to their doctors about the benefits of MRI screenings, to detect any cancers before symptoms become apparent.

The campaign also encouraged the female participants to look out for breast cancer symptoms, such as dimples on the skin, swelling, nipple discharge, redness, nipple pain and lumps.

Organizers called on their "female friends" to acquire knowledge about breast cancer and work on a lifestyle of prevention, as breast cancer has now become the number one cancer affecting women, and the average age of patients has rapidly declined.

Head of the TMUH's Breast Cancer Center, Hong Jin-sheng (洪進昇), said that 55 percent of patients with cancer in both breasts discover this during the same screening. The age of breast cancer patients ranges from 34 to 70, while 47 percent of patients fall in the 40-50 age group, and most cancer patients only discover their cancers fairly late into its growth, making treatment more aggressive and difficult. Therefore prevention is one of the most affective ways to fight breast cancer, the campaign advocated.

The message that women must be vigilant and perform routine self-examination is quite right. Early detection dramatically increases survival over the long term and means the effects of therapy can be mitigated. The Taiwan Cancer Registry ( 台灣癌症登記小組) is the premier source of information about breast cancer, and all other cancers, in Taiwan. The information collected and the analysis of the information is first rate.
