Nation to officially enter global food bank network

TAIPEI -- Jeffrey Klein, president and CEO of the Global Food Banking Network (GFN), will announce in person Taiwan's accession to the international organization, at a ceremony in Taipei on Oct. 1, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said yesterday.

At the ceremony, Taiwan will be officially named as the 24th member of the GFN and linked to a network of food banks worldwide, said Wu Jung-chuan, CEO of the People's Food Bank Association in Taiwan, at a meeting hosted by the ministry.

Klein will deliver a speech titled "Building Food Safety" and will discuss issues related to Taiwan, Wu said.

Wu said the food bank association in Taiwan is collecting nearly expired food from supermarkets, while the Chicago-based GFN is encouraging people in the United States put out such food next to their mailboxes for collection.

The international food bank was jointly launched by organizations in Canada, the U.S., Argentina and Mexico with the goal of alleviating world hunger by improving global resource allocation and reducing food waste.
