Lin Join-sane begins role as cross-strait body chief

TAIPEI -- The new head of the Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF, 海協會) vowed yesterday to protect the interests of Taiwanese businessmen operating in China and strengthen cross-strait exchanges.

Lin Join-Sane (林中森), 67, formerly secretary-general of the ruling Kuomintang (KMT), took over the post from Chiang Pin-kung, who stepped down after four years and four months on the job.

Lin said he will work hard to safeguard the interests of Taiwanese business people in China and carry out the three main missions of the SEF — cross-strait negotiations, exchanges and services.

"I'll do my best to serve the best interests of Taiwan and its people," he said.

President Ma Ying-jeou said Lin has "always accomplished his mission in every post," including in his last government job as Cabinet secretary-general.
