Number of eTag users exceeds 1.3 million within four months

Since drivers around the island were allowed to start on May 15 installing new eTag devices free of charge for the electronic toll collection system (ETC) on freeways, the number of eTag users has exceeded 1.3 million as of yesterday, already exceeding the number of 1.21 million users of onboard units (OBUs), according to the statistics issued by the Far Eastern Electronic Toll Collection Co., Ltd.(FETC).

FETC President Chang Yung-chang released the figure at a seminar, hosted by the Chinese-language Economic Daily News, on the development of intelligent freeways, with professors from the National Chiao Tung University, Yuan Ze University and officials from the Taiwan Area National Expressway Bureau invited to exchange views on the topic.

Chang said since the FETC was contracted to administer the freeway ETC system in 2006, the number of applicants for installing OBUs has reached a total of only 1.21 million over the past six years. But the number of eTag users has shot up to 1.3 million within only four months, indicating that eTag devices are quite popular with drivers.

Currently there are 2.5 million effective users of ETC system, and the ETC lanes utilization rate has reached an average of 60 percent, translating into six out of 10 vehicles running on freeways using ETC lanes.
