Chairman Su makes birthday wish for DPP

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Chairman Su Tseng-chang (蘇貞昌) yesterday asked for peaceful cross-strait relations for his party's 26th birthday.

Today marks the 26th year since the DPP's founding. A day before, Su presided at a banquet reception for some 100 guests from foreign representative offices in Taiwan.

Elections are due soon in the U.S., South Korea and Japan, while mainland China is set to see a leadership transition by year's end. As a result, the world is preparing to face unpredictable times. The DPP wishes for peace in the future, said Su.

"In July of last year, I visited Northern Europe with my family. I placed my feet on the borderline of Norway and Sweden, where there was no war, conflict or misfires, or soldiers or police, but only kind customs officials and souvenir shops. This is the vision of peace that the DPP pictures in cross-strait relations and regional stability," said Su yesterday.

At the same time, the party hopes to spread peace to "every corner of Taiwan," while "using public diplomacy and smart power to expand Taiwan's contributions to the world."

"This is the birthday wish for the DPP turning 26 years old," said Su.

At the annual DPP banquet for diplomats, the crowd included Director Christopher J. Marut of the American Institute in Taiwan and delegates from the European Union Centre in Taiwan (歐盟駐台代表處), the Japan Interchange Association (日本交流協會), the British Council (英國文化協會) and the Canadian Trade Office in Taipei (加拿大駐台北貿易辦事處).

The DPP headquarters are set today to host former chairmen and party personnel in a low-key commemoration at Taipei's Yuanshan Park, site of the party's founding.

Former DPP Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen is overseas and not expected at the event, said headquarters spokesman Wang Min-sheng (王閔生).
