Okinawa-bound Typhoon Sanba strengthens: CWB

OkTAIPEI -- Typhoon Sanba has intensified into a strong typhoon and is expected to head toward Okinawa, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said yesterday.

Sanba gained strength to become a strong typhoon at 8 p.m., the bureau said, adding that long waves generated by the storm will hit Taiwan's eastern and southeastern coasts Friday afternoon.

As of 8 p.m., the typhoon was centered about 1,120 kilometers southeast of Taiwan's southernmost tip of Eluanbi, moving in a north-northwesterly direction at a speed of 16 km per hour, the bureau said.

Sanba is packing maximum sustained winds of 183.6 kph and gusts reaching 226.8 kph, according to the bureau.

If Sanba maintains its current course, the bureau said, its outer bands could begin affecting Taiwan's weather this weekend.
