NTU, NTHU leap to 80th, 192nd in ranking of world universities

The China Post news staff--National Taiwan University jumped up seven places to rank 80th, while National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) leapt up to sit at 192nd in the 2012 QS World University Rankings.

NTU was the only Taiwanese university to make it into top 100 in the latest world university rankings. Due to increase in citations per faculty and the number of academic papers cited by others, NTU's overall score was lifted from 66.6 to 69.9 points.

Director Li Fang-jen (李芳仁) of NTU Office of Research and Development stated that the university will keep recruiting talented scholars from all around the world in order to provide better learning environments for students.

Li stressed that though the result reflects the effectiveness of the government's program of “Five-year, NT$50 Billion Grants,” NTU's faculties will keep improving their dissertations' quality and quantity, in order to achieve the university's long-term goal of ranking among the world's top 50 universities.

On the other hand, while NTHU was ranked in the top 200, President Chen Li-chun (陳力俊) stated that there still remains room for improvement, as the university's long-term goal is to get ranked into the top 100.

Chen explained that though NTHU's citation counts per faculty, as well as engineering and technology were ranked 105th and 93rd, respectively, due to a low student-teacher ratio and insufficient number of international students, the university's overall performance was ranked 192nd.

Regarding solutions to NTHU's predicaments, Chen stressed that it would be impossible for the university to lift its student-teacher ratio if the Ministry of Education does not allow the university to recruit more faculty members. Meanwhile, Chen also added that the university ought to increase its number of scholarships in order to attract more international students to study at NTHU.
