DPP will not make pro-China policies: chairman

The China Post news staff--Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Chairman Su Tseng-chang (蘇貞昌) stated in a seminar yesterday that the DPP will never follow the Kuomintang's (KMT) steps to make any pro-China policies, asserting that the KMT's pro-China attitude can never be a long-lasting view for Taiwanese people .

Regarding Chairman of the Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Strait (ARATS) Chen Yun-lin's (陳雲林) visit to Taiwan, Su stated that Taiwan has long been backed by democracy and native culture. Su called on Chen to pay more attention to Taiwan's cultural essence rather than giving cursory glances.

Su stressed that the DPP will come to understand mainland China through learning about its politics, economy, social structure and human rights first. Su added that in order to help Taiwan defend itself, the DPP will insist on standing on the same side with people living on the island.

In his speech, Su said that no one could have imagined that Chongqing's former Deputy Mayor Wang Li-jun (王立軍) would defect to Consulate General of the United States in Chengdu to report to U.S. officials that former Chinese politician Bo Xi-lai's (薄熙來) wife Gu Kai-lai (谷開來) was involved with murder of British businessman Neil Heywood; no one could have imagined that blind dissident Chen Guang-cheng (陳光誠) was allowed to apply for a student visa to study in the U.S.; no one could have imagined that Xi Jin-ping (習近平), vice president of the People's Republic of China, has missed many scheduled meetings over the past week.

Su concluded that the only thing certain to everyone is that only mainland Chinese people can bring change to the country.

Su indicated that from aspects of human nature, global trends and the future of mainland China, Taiwanese people will never approve the Communist Party's political ideologies, nor do they endorse the KMT's pro-China attitude.

Su reiterated that ultimately Taiwanese people will choose to stand on the same side with the DPP, for the party always backs the spirit of anti-authoritarianism, liberty, democracy and human rights.
