Businessman Jeffrey Koo Sr. receives Japan's highest honor

Chinatrust Financial Holding Co. Chairman Jeffrey Koo Sr. (辜濂松) was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun (旭日重光章), the highest honor bestowed by the Japanese government to businesspeople. He received the award on Sept. 7 because of his continuous efforts to promote bilateral ties between Taiwan and Japan. Koo is the first person to receive the honor after Japan switched diplomatic recognition to mainland China in 1972.

The order was presented to Koo by Japanese representative Tarui Sumio on behalf of the emperor. Tarui praised Koo's extraordinary contributions and stated that the signing of the Taiwan-Japan investment agreement facilitated by Koo is the most remarkable diplomatic achievement between Taiwan and Japan accomplished after 1972.

Koo stated that he will try to make more contributions for the sake of his country and society.

After the severance of official diplomatic ties between Taiwan and Japan, Koo maintained bilateral communication on both official and civil levels. Koo established several organizations, such as the Taiwan Japan Association for Business Communication, increasing the dialogue between the two countries.

As one of the most influential businesspeople in Taiwan, Koo has spent the past 40 years promoting trade and visiting politicians in different countries. He has received medals and orders from home and abroad for his accomplishments.

Despite the fact that helping the government to establish ties with others is not as lucrative as doing other businesses, Koo said he is still devoted to the task. He set a new personal record of crossing the globe 17.5 times in a single year, disrupting his biological clock.
