Made-in-Taiwan armored vehicles displayed to public

The China Post--A batch of locally developed armored vehicles that recently joined Taiwanese troops will go on public display for the first time at a military base opening in Northern Taiwan today.

The CM-32 Clouded Leopard (雲豹裝甲車), an eight-wheeled armored vehicle currently being produced by the Army, will go on display at the Military Police School at New Taipei City's Linkou District today, the Ministry of National Defense (MND) recently announced.

The armored vehicles will be on display, along with many of the country's military aircraft, including the Army OH-58D scout helicopters and AH-1W Super Cobra attack helicopters, during the event as part of the military's efforts to promote public awareness of national defense.

The event will also feature a widely anticipated military police motorcycle performance and a demonstration of military police dogs, the MND said.

Officially known as Taiwan Infantry Fighting Vehicle (TIFV), the MND-designed and developed Clouded Leopard entered mass production in 2007. Several dozen vehicles have recently been put into service by the military police.

The TIFV, with its outer plates made of steel produced by China Steel, is capable of withstanding 12.7 mm armor-piercing shells, according to the MND.

It also can be equipped with a 20 mm chain gun, a 120 mm mortar or a 105 mm cannon.

There were previous reports that the eight-wheeled armored vehicle is not as bulletproof as its producer claims and some lawmakers have been questioning the quality of the steel plates covering the vehicle's body.

But the military has refuted the allegations and stressed that the armored vehicles have all been tested and found capable of withstanding armor-piercing shells.
