Passenger load control to be seen on No. 5 freeway

A high passenger load control will be put into practice regularly on the northbound lanes of the No. 5 National Freeway, which links Taipei and the northeastern county of Yilan, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sundays, starting from Sept. 16, in order to ease traffic jams on the freeway in the given time section, according to the Taiwan Area National Freeway Bureau.

Under the control, each small car will be required to carry at least three people if it is to run on the northbound lanes of the Taipei-Yilan Freeway from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sundays, bureau officials said.

The officials also said that the bureau conducted a high load control on the northbound lanes of the freeway on a trial basis in July, finding a significant reduction in traffic flow and driving time needed. For instance, it took only 66-67 minutes to drive from the Luodong system to the Nangang system, down from the original 93 minutes, as a result of the high load control.
