CDC urges caution after 40 new dengue fever cases

The China Post news staff--Officials at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) urged the public to heighten their awareness of dengue fever as 40 new cases were confirmed last week, setting the highest weekly record so far this year.

The four confirmed dengue hemorrhagic fever cases was a new high for the past 10 years, according to officials of the CDC under the Department of Health.

The 40 newly confirmed cases last week were all in Southern Taiwan with 30 in Tainan City. The Central West District and Anan District have the highest concentration.

The other 10 cases were diagnosed in Kaohsiung City with Lingya District having the most cases.

The overall number of confirmed cases this year has now increased to 312, including 161 indigenous cases on the island and 151 cases originating overseas.

CDC Deputy Chief Chou Jih-haw said the 40 new cases confirmed last week were twice the number of the total for the two preceding weeks.
