Mayor of Tainan defeats peers in approval ratings

TAIPEI -- Tainan Mayor Lai Ching-te of the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) beat Taiwan's other 21 local government chiefs to take first place in recent approval ratings, according to the results of a survey released Monday. The survey, conducted by Taipei-based CommonWealth magazine, said Lai, who ranked third in 2011, won the people's trust by focusing on quality of life to make Tainan a more livable city.

The annual report also showed that all of the six DPP local government chiefs remained in the top 10, while ruling Kuomintang (KMT) members occupied all places from 11th to 22nd.

Among the top 10 officials, five are government chiefs serving their first term, like Lai, the report showed.

Though they enjoy high visibility, New Taipei Mayor Eric Liluan Chu, Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin and Taichung Mayor Jason Hu — all with the KMT — were among the bottom five in terms of their approval ratings.

People now want officials who are not only honest but also capable, the report indicated.
