TAIPEI--Taiwanese vegetable vendor and philanthropist Chen Shu-chu, who recently received a Ramon Magsaysay Award in the Philippines, said upon her return home Sunday that she will donate the prize money to a hospital in Taitung County.
She told reporters at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport that she is making a living on her own and therefore will donate the prize of US$50,000 to Mackay Memorial Hospital's Taitung branch to help improve the medical resources in the Eastern Taiwan county.
Chen is the 11th Taiwanese to receive the Ramon Magsaysay Award, which has become known as the "Nobel Prize of Asia."
She said she was warmly welcomed by Taiwanese expatriates in Manila, which made her very happy.
As an enthusiastic vegetable vendor, Chen said, she visited traditional markets in the Philippines, which she described as similar to Taiwan's.
Chen will be received by President Ma Ying-jeou Monday and will also hand over the US$50,000 donation at a ceremony to be held at Mackay Memorial Hospital's Taipei headquarters.
