Freighters arrive at Lanyu with recovery material

The China Post news staff--To help restore Lanyu (蘭嶼) from the destruction brought by Typhoon Tembin (天秤), two freighters arrived at Lanyu's Kai-yuan Harbor (開元港) at 5 a.m. yesterday, bringing with them rescue materials including steel, gasoline, reconstruction materials, consumer goods and equipment from Chunghwa Telecom.

Chinese Petroleum Corporation, Taiwan (CPC) also helped provide refueling nozzles, fuel drums and a sufficient amount of fuel for the following seven days. The oil supplier had estimated they might begin supplying fuel to the island by noon, yesterday.

Ever since Typhoon Tembin ravaged Southern Taiwan, Lanyu has been suffering from a severe shortage of materials. Though the military has mobilized helicopters to aid Lanyu residents, limited helicopter storage space means that most materials can only be delivered via freighters. After shipping lanes were cleared, two freighters departed from Taitung Fu-kang (富岡) Harbor on Thursday night at 11 p.m. and arrived at Lanyu yesterday morning.

After the two freighters arrived at Lanyu, workers at the harbor unloaded all the materials immediately.

According to CPC's marketing department, the fuel delivered thus far is estimated to be sufficient for the next seven days.

Meanwhile, as the military is still in the process of rescue operations at schools and homes, authorities estimated they might complete initial cleanup efforts in the next two days.
