Up to 2 more storms may hit Taiwan this year: CWB

TAIPEI--As many as two more tropical storms or typhoons may hit Taiwan this autumn as the typhoon season this year has so far been particularly active, the Central Weather Bureau said yesterday.

Environmental conditions in the western North Pacific will remain favorable for storms to form due to a developing El Nino episode, which may bring warmer-than-normal weather to Taiwan between September and November, the bureau said.

"We have seen a more active typhoon season this year compared with the last five years, and we are expecting the situation to continue," said Cheng Ming-dean, director of the bureau's Weather Forecast Center.

He explained that a weaker subtropical high and stronger southwestern winds this summer have contributed to the higher number of tropical storms.

Taiwan has seen three typhoons this summer, Talim, Saola and Tembin, and a total of 15 storms have formed in the western North Pacific.
