Upon Lin's arrival, one male fan gave him a basket of dumplings from Shanghai's Nanxiang District, a suburb famous for traditional snacks, while a female fan made Lin an English guide to Shanghai's best food.
Lin thanked the fans for welcoming him and his mother at the airport and said that he was looking forward to touring the city and trying out Shanghai's snacks.
“We love you forever, Jeremy,” the fans shouted. “Welcome to Shanghai!”
Most of the fans were women, and many were excited to see the star, who told his well-wishers that this was not his first visit to Shanghai.
“He is so friendly, I think I'm going crazy,” one female fan remarked.
The fans were mostly dressed in Lin's old New York Knicks jersey, but said they would follow Lin and switch their support to the Houston Rockets.
Houston signed the 23-year-old Lin in a three-year US$25.1 million deal on July 19. The Knicks declined to match the contract.
Lin, who showed support for Taiwan's Olympic taekwondo bronze medalist Tseng Li-chen, said he would not have any time to watch other Olympic events during his stay in China, but would continue to follow news reports.
The basketball star flew from Beijing to Shanghai and will be staying in the city until Aug. 17, before leaving for Guangzhou and Dongguan in Guangdong Province to attend an NBA training camp.
