Wei-Yin Chen bags 10th win with seven scoreless inningsCNA TAIPEI -- Taiwan's Wei-Yin Chen pitched seven scoreless innings in the Baltimore Orioles' 4-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays Sunday, earning his 10th win in his major league debut season.
August 6, 2012, 11:21 am TWN Chen's 10 wins are also the most for a rookie Taiwanese pitcher, breaking his own record of nine wins July 29, when he outdid the previous best of eight set by Chien-Ming Wang in 2005. Coming off his previous start, when he struck out 12 in his team's 6-1 victory over the Oakland A's, Chen was just as efficient on Sunday. The 26-year-old Kaohsiung-native threw 100 pitches over seven innings, including 73 strikes. He struck out four batters and walked just one to improve his record to 10-6. Chen's stellar outing also helped the Orioles to return to the second place on the American League East, tying with the Rays. “I feel good today,” Chen said through a translator. “Especially, (catcher Matt) Wieters gave me a really good target. I just hit the target,” he was quoted as saying by AP. Sunday's game in St. Petersburg, Florida was Chen's third encounter with the Rays this season. He lost the previous two. “Chen was the story,” Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. “Five three-ball counts in two games ... he made a lot of quality pitches,” Showalter said. “Their guy pitched well and they did play good defense,” Rays manager Joe Maddon was quoted as saying in a separate AP story. “They played well. They flat beat us tonight.”
