Tropical Storm Haikui is not likely to affect Taiwan

TAIPEI--A tropical storm that developed near Guam yesterday is expected to head toward the Ryukyu Islands and is not forecast to pose a major threat to Taiwan.

Tropical Storm Haikui was located around 1,230 kilometers northwest of Guam, moving slowly in a west-northwesterly direction at a speed of 25 kilometers per hour, the Central Weather Bureau said yesterday.

Haikui, the 11th storm of the Pacific typhoon season this year, was over 2,000 kilometers east of Taiwan as of Friday afternoon, but the bureau predicted that a weakening Pacific high pressure system would push the storm further north, reducing the odds that it will threaten the island.

Typhoon Saola, which was downgraded to a tropical storm on Thursday, drenched the eastern and northern parts of Taiwan before moving away Friday and entering Fujian province in China.

The bureau lifted its land warning for the storm Friday morning.
