Hsieh, Chuang defeated in Olympic quarterfinals

The China Post news staff and CNA--Taiwan tennis pair Hsieh Su-wei (謝淑薇) and Chuang Chia-jung (莊佳容) were defeated in Olympic quarterfinals by the fourth-seeded Czech pair of Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka in the women's doubles competition.

Despite the loss the pair will leave London having set a new record for Taiwanese tennis players by reaching the round of eight, following an upset win earlier Wednesday.

The win marked the first time that any Taiwanese tennis player, male or female, has ever made it past the last 16 at the Olympics.

Hsieh and Chuang did it the hard way, defeating Flavia Pennetta and Francesca Schiavone of Italy 6-7 (3), 7-5, 6-4 in a grueling match that spanned Tuesday through Wednesday.

The Taiwanese duo lost the first set in a tiebreaker on Tuesday but fought hard in the second set later that day to score a 5-5 tie before the game was suspended due to failing light.

The situation turned around after the match resumed the following day, with Hsieh and Chuang breaking the Italian pair's serve and going on to win the second set 7-5 to force the game into a third set.

The pair stepped up their offense efforts in the third, outscoring their opponents 3-1.

Although the Italians caught up later, Hsieh and Chuang managed to break their opponents' serve again to win the set 6-4 and take the match.

The hard-won victory was particularly sweet for the two, as Chuang lost to the Italian pair in the 2008 Beijing Olympics when she was partnered with Chan Yung jan.

Hsieh was scheduled to face the Italian team in this year's Wimbledon women's doubles in round 16, but forfeited the match after her German partner, Sabine Lisicki, withdrew from the tournament due to injury.

Chuang said before Tuesday's match that her unhappy memories will be swept away, and that she looked forward for to the match.
