Taiwan wins five golds at Int'l Physics Olympiad

It was the third consecutive year that Taiwan won five gold medals at the prestigious international physics competition for secondary school students, the ministry noted.

Taiwan's team of five students and 10 professors was led by Chia Chih-ta, a physics professor at National Taiwan Normal University.

The five students were National Experimental High School at Hsinchu Science Park's Liu Yu-ting, National Chiayi Senior High School's Wang Chien-an, and Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School's Huang Kai-chi, Hsieh Chun-ting and Ko Wei-jen.

Huang also won the top experiment award at the competition, which concluded Monday.

The 43rd International Physics Olympiad attracted 378 students from 82 countries, with the Chinese team taking the overall title.

Taiwan has participated in the international academic event since 1994, and has won a total of 47 gold, 19 silver, 18 bronze medals and 8 honorary awards at the event as of 2012.
