US visa-waiver application being processed: official

WASHINGTON D.C.--Taiwan's application to enter the United States visa-waiver program is still being processed and there is no timeframe for its completion, a U.S. official said Tuesday.

There have been no new developments in the processing of the application, said David Donahue, U.S. deputy assistant secretary of state for visa services, after a meeting at a foreign policy think tank in Washington D.C.

However, since U.S. Secretary of State Hilary Clinton formally nominated Taiwan last December as a candidate for the visa-waiver program, everything has been on track, Donahue added.

In January, U.S. homeland security officials visited Taiwan to determine whether the country met the requirements of the program.

Taiwan Premier Wu Den-yih said in May that the country might gain admission to the U.S. visa-waiver program in October.
