Ma hopes for extra session to resolve beef, tax issues

TAIPEI--President Ma Ying-jeou said yesterday he hoped the United States beef imports and capitals gain tax issues can be resolved in the Legislative Yuan's extraordinary session in July.

Ma said he would respect the result of consultations among political parties regarding the extra session, according to the Executive Yuan's spokesman Hu Yu-wei.

Moreover, the president said he would not use administrative decree to allow imports of U.S. beef containing leanness enhancing drug ractopamine, Hu added.

The beef issue has stalled Trade and Investment Framework Agreement talks between Taiwan and United States.

Finance Minister Chang Sheng-ford also said at a press conference on the same day that Ma hoped the capitals gain tax amendments can be passed in July.

The Legislative Yuan's extraordinary session that was scheduled for Wednesday has been delayed to July because of the approaching Tropical Storm Talim.
