Suspected truck thief nabbed for using stolen ETC device

Police have arrested a suspect who allegedly stole a trailer truck cabin and installed its electronic toll collection (ETC) device in his own vehicle in a bid to save on toll fees when driving on the freeway network.

A police officer said the suspect, Tseng Zi-yang, stole the truck in the early hours of April 19 from a parking lot in central Taichung City.

Tseng, aged 58 with prior records of theft and forgery, soon sold the truck to an unaware buyer for NT$100,000.

But he kept the e-Tag ETC device from the trailer and installed it on his own car, thinking he could to save toll costs and use freeways for free.

Tseng was happy because he got 10 exemptions from the toll fees of about NT$400 from the stored value of the ETC gadget.

He soon ran out of luck, however, after the trailer owner reported to police that his truck had been stolen.

In ensuing investigation, police officers tracked Tseng down after examining the photo images and ETC data grabbed at toll stations on the freeways.

Police also uncovered other stolen goods at his apartment.

Tseng was turned over to prosecutors for further investigation for larceny and forgery, said a police officer.
