Military ready to respond to tropical storm

The military is ready to conduct evacuation and rescue missions in the face of approaching Tropical Storm Talim that is expected to cause damage nationwide this week, the Ministry of National Defense (MND) announced yesterday.

All military branches in Taiwan proper and offshore islands are ready to conduct disaster-relief and rescue missions, the MND said in a statement, as the nation braces for possible heavy rainfall and flooding brought by the storm.

The MND said 48,000 military personnel, 3,267 ground vehicles, 404 sets of power generators, 201 sets of water pumps and 38 military aircraft are on standby to be deployed in disaster-relief operations.

Meanwhile, the armed forces also plan to open 107 military bases around the country to serve as emergency shelter for natural disaster victims. The centers are estimated to be able to house 53,272 people, the MND said.

The Central Weather Bureau issued a land warning early yesterday for Tropical Storm Talim, the first storm to directly hit Taiwan waters since the start of the 2012 Pacific typhoon season.
