Professor indicted for giving dissident info to China

The China Post news staff--A professor of Central Police University (CPU) was indicted yesterday for allegedly passing data on a Chinese dissident in Taiwan to China, Taipei District Prosecutors Office said.

Wu Chang-yu (吳彰裕), a CPU associate professor at the university's Department of Administrative Management, was indicted on charges of passing information related to visiting Chinese dissidents in Taiwan to Beijing in exchange for plane tickets to China, according to prosecutors.

Wu allegedly worked with two former police officers, Lin Po-hung (林柏宏) and Wu Tung-lin (吳東霖), both with the National Police Bureau's (NPB) Foreign Affairs Department, and both his former students, to gather entry and exit information on Chinese Falun Gong members, democracy activists and Tibetan independence supporters.

Wu Tung-lin was also indicted yesterday together with the professor for allegedly violating the National Security Act (國家安全法), prosecutors said.

Lin was not indicted yesterday since he has already confessed his misconduct to the prosecutors. He is to pay a NT$100,000 fine and do 80 hours of community service instead, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors allege Wu Chang-yu collected information on Chinese dissidents, pro-Tibetan independence activists and the Falun Gong movement in Taiwan.

The professor took photographs of Falun Gong's headquarters in Taiwan and gathered information of local Chinese dissidents from the two police officers and gave the above information to Chinese authorities in Guangdong province in August, 2010, prosecutors said

In exchange, Wu was given 30,000 yuan worth of plane tickets to China, the indictment said.

In his defense, the professor previously told investigators the information he offered was not confidential, but common information. He also denied he received tickets from China.

Wu Chang-yu teaches Chinese political history at the CPU. He is also renowned as a famous fortune-teller and feng shui master and receives broad media coverage.
