Taiwanese tennis player wins England doubles title

TAIPEI--Taiwanese tennis player Hsieh Su-wei (謝淑薇)and partner Timea Babos of Hungary won the AEGON Classic doubles title Sunday in Birmingham, England, edging out Lisa Raymond and Liezel Huber of the U.S. 7-5, 6-7 (2), 10-8.

The unseeded duo led the first set but gave up ground to the Americans, the top-ranked pair in the women's doubles contest, in the second set.

However, Hsieh and Babos won a grueling final set match tie break, when the duo scored six straight points to reverse a 4-8 deficit to snatch the title in the ladies' event, which had a total purse of US$220,000.

The duo were scheduled to face Zheng Jie and Zhang Shuai of China in the semifinals, but made it into the final without having to do so, as Zheng quit as a result of injuries suffered playing against Serbian Jelena Jankovic in an earlier singles event.
