Typhoon to miss Taiwan, but more heavy rain: CWB

Officials at CWB said yesterday that Guchol has been gradually picking up strength as it moves westward through the Western Pacific.

The new typhoon is unlikely to directly affect Taiwan, but its peripheral effects will bring heavy rain to the island, according to the forecasters.

The CWB said that the newest typhoon in the Pacific is expected to move west-northwest toward the Western Pacific over the next two days, although it remains uncertain about Guchol's exact location or how far it will come to Taiwan.

Meanwhile, the Taipei City Government announced yesterday that Mayor Hau Lung-bin has appointed Chang Pei-yi, a former deputy secretary-general of the city government, as the new chief of the Taipei Department of Public Works to take the place of Commissioner Lee Hsien-heng, who already tendered his resignation over the recent flooding in the capital city.

Commissioner Lee of the Public Works Department under the city government offered to step down over the flooding that hit Wenshan District's Wanfang Road earlier this week, and his resignations was soon approved by Mayor Hau.
