Taiwan has five of best 100 universities under 50 years old: UK magazine

By the China Post news staff--Taiwan has five of the world's best 100 universities under 50 years old, according to the British magazine Times Higher Education.

The inaugural edition of "Times Higher Education 100 Under 50" is set for publication today. The new annual ranking claims to "provide a unique insight into who the future Harvard and Cambridge universities may be."

Number one on the list is 26-year-old Pohang University of Science and Technology of South Korea.

Taiwan's National Sun Yat-Sen University earned a 30th-place ranking, according to a preview released yesterday.

UK Leads, East Asia Gaining

The UK has 20 institutions on the list, which is more than any other nation.

Australia follows with 14, while the United States — which dominates the traditional Times Higher Education World University Rankings — has nine representatives.

Times Higher Education Rankings Editor Phil Baty remarked the trend of a rising East Asia.

South Korea takes both the world's number one spot and fifth place, with the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology.

Hong Kong takes four spots, including third place with the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

Singapore has one representative — Nanyang Technological University — at 16th place.

"Asian institutions are showing great strength," said Baty.

"Some institutions have managed to achieve in a matter of years what the traditional elite universities have developed over many generations. The landscape is changing quickly and the old global hierarchies cannot rest on their laurels," he said.
