Chen Chu urges harmonious cross-Taiwan Strait exchanges

Acting Chairwoman Chen Chu of the main opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) said she hoped that the new DPP chief elected yesterday would ably handle the issues concerning Taiwan's harmonious exchanges with mainland China.

Chen, who is also incumbent Kaohsiung mayor, made the call when casting her ballot to elect the new party boss.

She said that all candidates could engage in a fierce contest for the top party post but should never cause division within the DPP.

Chen expressed the hope that the new party chairman will lead the DPP toward progress, win wider confidence in the party from the general public, help elevate public optimism about the future of Taiwan and the DPP, and carefully and wisely promote Taiwan's cordial exchanges with the mainland in the future.

As for herself, Chen said she was glad to pass over the top party post to a new DPP leader so that she can focus on the municipal administrative affairs of Kaohsiung City.

Chen said that during her temporary tenure, she and the party members worked together to successfully win the mayor election of Lukang in central Changhua County, lead the public in massive demonstrations against the policy of the administration of the ruling Kuomintang to sharply raise fuel and electricity prices and stage widespread protests against the KMT plan to ease imports of U.S. beef products.

Chen is scheduled to formally hand over the DPP reins on Wednesday, May 30 to former Premier Su Tseng-chang, who captured more than half of total ballots cast by DPP members to win the five-candidate race for the top party post yesterday.
