Opposition pans Ma's 'one ROC, 2 areas'

The China Post--Opposition legislators yesterday panned President Ma Ying-jeou's “one Republic of China, two areas” statement in his inaugural address.

Amid recent domestic tension over the “one country, two areas” cross-strait formula, Ma stressed on Sunday that “the two sides of the Taiwan Strait have been defined as “one Republic of China, two areas” throughout the administrations of the past three presidents.

“When we speak of 'one China,' naturally it is the 'Republic of China,'” he said.

At the Legislative Yuan yesterday, Minister Lai Shin-Yuan Lai (賴幸媛) of the Mainland Affairs Council (陸委會) fielded criticism of Ma's address by pan-green legislators.

Huang Wen-ling (黃文玲) of the Taiwan Solidarity Union (TSU, 台聯) asked Lai if mainland Chinese officials have responded unfavorably to “One R.O.C., two areas” formulation.

Lai said there were no reports so far of unfavorable Chinese reception.

“Usually there's a huge fuss from China. Or have you negotiated with them behind closed doors?” asked Huang.

Lai sharply denied the claim.

“This is our nation's inaugural address — why would we have to negotiate with mainland China?” she said.

At the podium, Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Legislator Lee Chun-yi (李俊俋) said that a verbal switch to “One R.O.C., two areas” is mere wordplay.

“Ma uses a lot of words,” said Lee. “But what has mainland China accepted? Who in the international community accepts that China is the R.O.C.?

“He is playing a game of words that means nothing for Taiwan's development,” he said.

When given opportunity to respond, Lai told legislators that cross-strait relations will progress stably in Ma's second term, under a framework extending from his first term.

Interactions with mainland China will be “social and economic” and stay” respectful of public opinion,” she said.

But Taiwan will defend its sovereignty, in such cases as the current standoff in the South China Sea region.

Ma Ying-Jeou's use of words is ridiculously unbearable and down right stupid. He talks and talks and talks but does other things... I think he just wants people to pay attention to something odd he said and not pay any attention to what he's actually doing.
