Ex-Pentagon official affirms US' commitment to Taiwan

The China Post news staff--The United States will not give up on Taiwan, which is situated in an area where many countries would like to stake a claim, experts said yesterday.

The U.S. will continue to deploy military forces in Asia-Pacific to shape regional politics and provide assistance to its allies, said Wallace Gregson, a former Pentagon official.

Gregson, a former assistant secretary of defense for Asian and Pacific security affairs, said that as the global situation gets more and more complicated, the United Stated is adjusting its strategy.

The U.S. military focus is pivoting toward Asia-Pacific from the Middle East, Gregson told a forum co-hosted in Taipei by the local Tamkang University and the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).

The forum focused on the relationship of the U.S. strategy in Asia Pacific and Taiwan's fate.

Gregson cited U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton as saying that the United States must use its wisdom to systematically invest its time and energy.

Earlier this year, U.S. President Barack Obama noted that the United States will increase its military presence in the Asia-Pacific region.

He did not specifically mention Taiwan, but a participant of the forum, Abe Denmark, noted that it means much to the island because the United States has no intention to withdraw from Asia.
