Taiwan students shine in United States math contest

TAIPEI--Taiwan's elementary school students have again shown outstanding mathematical ability as four students scored full marks in the American Math League (AML) individual competition this year.

Four out of hundreds of Taiwanese students got perfect scores in the AML6 contest for grade six that took place simultaneously in 15 countries, including the U.S., Canada, Taiwan and China, on Feb. 25, the non-profit National Association of Student Learning Achievement Assessment (NASLAA) said in Taipei Sunday.

The NASLAA was the organizer of the test in Taiwan.

This year, 53 students from around the world scored full marks in the AML6 individual contest, including four from Taiwan and 11 from China, NASLAA executive Chen Jung-hui, said at an awards ceremony.

The test results indicated that Taiwanese students overall had a high level of mathematical ability that may have been affected in some cases by their poor reading comprehension, Chen said.
