MLB's Hu Chin-lung to join minor league team

TAIPEI--U.S. Major League Baseball (MLB) player Hu Chin-lung of Taiwan is to join the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs after the Philadelphia Phillies dropped a deal to sign him, the player's agent said yesterday.

The Phillies had been planning to sign the 28-year-old second baseman to strengthen its affiliated minor league's in-field after Hu was released by the Cleveland Indians, but he did not pass a physical, which resulted in the cancellation of the deal, his agent said.

Hu needs to maintain his feel for the ball and will join the Blue Crabs before the regular MLB season kicks off in early April.

Hu began his 2011 season as one of the 25 members of the New York Mets opening roster, but was outrighted to the minor league for his low batting average of 0.050, having made only one bat out of 20.
