Tseng finishes 5th at 9-under in Singapore

TAIPEI--World No. 1 female golfer Yani Tseng of Taiwan finished fifth after shooting a three-under 69 in the final round of the HSBC Women's Championship in Singapore Sunday.

Coming into the final round three shots behind, Tseng surged up the leaderboard after carding five birdies on the front nine.

After birdying the second, fourth, fifth, sixth and ninth holes, Tseng gained a share of the lead with South Korean Jenny Shin.

However, Tseng stumbled on the back nine, hitting a double bogey on the 10th and another bogey on the 14th, while missing a putt for a birdie on the 17th to finish at nine-under 279.

American Angela Stanford's bogey on the par-4 18th forced a four-way playoff that saw Stanford and three other players — China's Shanshan Feng, Shin and her South Korean counterpart Na Yeon-choi — vying for top place at 10-under 278.

Feng dropped out at the first playoff hole and Choi at the second, leaving Stanford and Shin competing at the third extra hole.

Stanford eventually parred the hole to beat Shin, who tied for second with Feng and Choi, to become the first American to win the third LPGA tournament of the year.

"It's pretty cool. HSBC is one of the premier events on our tour. (It) always has the best players. It's a big deal," Stanford said.

Tseng, who secured her first victory of the year in Thailand last week, has failed to win the HSBC Women's Championship since it began in 2008.

The 23-year-old had seven LPGA victories last year, including major victories in the LPGA Championship and the Women's British Open. The five-time major champion had 12 worldwide victories last season and 33 career worldwide professional wins.
