DPP councilor sets time, location for bungee jump after losing election betIn the run-up to Jan. 14, the 52-year old Wang promised to perform a bungee jump if DPP presidential candidate Tsai Ing-wen loses the election. Wang said that he will meet the pledge mid-March on the Dahan Bridge (大漢橋). Greater Taipei's Dahan Bridge is one of the more famous attractions along the North Cross-Island Highway (北橫公路). The fire-truck red bridge sits some 72 meters above the river surface. Its height and scenic locale make the bridge a hotspot for extreme sports enthusiasts. Wang said he surveyed the site just recently and dropped an unopened soft drink can from the bridge. It took nearly eight seconds to hit the river, he said. Wang added that he has begun intensive training so that he may safely complete the activity. He will request an assistant to take photographs for evidence. During the 2008 legislative campaign, Wang pledged to jump in the ocean if the KMT sent “Eight Immortals across the Ocean” (八仙過海) — if all eight of Taipei's electoral districts were to go blue. They did, and Wang took the plunge in a nationally televised event. Office Staff Concerned Aides from Wang's office in Taipei declined to confirm the reported date and location of the promised bungee jump because the police said it could be illegal. And the staff are “very concerned” over Wang's health, said an aide under condition of anonymity. Wang suffers from high blood pressure, said the aide. The average person who hears of an elder bungee jumping “would absolutely feel worried.” “But judging from his personality, I know he will jump,” the aide said. Thailand, New Zealand, and the Dahan Bridge all remain in the running — nothing is final, said the source. Responding to the reported date, the aide said only that Wang does expects to fulfill the pledge before he takes up duties in the Taipei City Council. The Taipei City Council opens for session April 9. | |||||||||||||
