President, first lady attend funeral of baseball legendTseng Chi-en's (曾紀恩) family accepted a posthumous presidential award from Ma in recognition of the highly respected coach's years of contribution to the development of baseball in Taiwan. Tseng died Feb. 12 at the age of 90 after spending more than two weeks in the hospital. He suffered a stroke on Jan. 27. Tseng led many baseball teams in his life and won numerous international and local titles. He retired as head coach of the Brother Elephants pro-baseball team in 1991. His no-nonsense style of coaching earned him the nickname “Iron Coach.” Ma and Chow arrived at the funeral accompanied by Sports Minister Tai Hsia-ling. The president did not stay long. He left after presenting the award and shaking hands with the family and baseball heavyweights attending the funeral. The first lady attended the full funeral service. | |||||||||||||
