President's Office to end its online journal service

TAIPEI--President Ma Ying-jeou's weekly online journal will be ended this month in preparation for a more diversified platform with which Ma can interact with the public, Presidential Office spokesman Fan Chiang Tai-chi said yesterday.

The weekly online journal, which was launched in July 2009 during the global financial crisis and about 14 months after Ma took office in 2008, will broadcast its final installment on Feb. 18, Fan Chiang said.

The journal was inspired by the fireside chats given by United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt over the radio between 1933 and 1944.

In the 137 episodes of the journal since it was launched, many prominent figures from local society have joined the president to discuss major policies or issues related to social welfare, environmental protection, disaster prevention and human rights.
