Police take heat for ignoring Makiyo videoThe footage that came under the spotlight late Wednesday was presented by another taxi driver, identified by his surname Chiang, who recorded it with his cab's onboard camcorder. In the video a woman, later identified by prosecutors as Makiyo, kicking the cab driver, surnamed Lin. Chiang happened to drive by the alleged crime scene during the assault and recorded the footage, which is the key evidence used against the female entertainer after her Japanese friend Takateru Tomoyori previously claimed that he was the only one involved in the attack. The United Evening News (UEN) yesterday quoted sources as saying that Chiang had handed the footage to a nearby police station two hours after the incident, which took place around midnight Feb. 2 in Taipei. The investigators were unable to receive the key evidence earlier because of a local police officer's negligence, the UEN added. According to local reports, Chiang originally handed the footage to a police officer from Songshan District Police, Sanmin Branch. The officer later passed it to another officer from Xinyi District Police, Shenchangli Police Station. According to authorities, the reason for the drawn-out transfer was because the location of the Makiyo incident falls under the jurisdiction of the Shenchangli branch. However, the officer in Shenchangli did not check the video clip immediately after receiving it from his colleague in Sanmin. The key evidence was kept in a draw of his desk for nearly a week until local media visited Shenchangli earlier this week, asking for the footage in question after reporters received a complaint from Chiang concerning the fact that the police had failed to handle his evidence properly, the UEN reported. Police to Punish Officer for Delay In response, Xinyi police authorities yesterday downplayed the accusations made by the media report, saying that the officer simply “forgot” to check the footage. The officer in question will be punished for his negligence, the police said.
Comments February 10, 2012 joynny.brian@ Reply Nobody cares about cold weather these days because Taiwanese media sector is reporting hot juicy gossips or tabloids. It is a waste of time to watch these re-run news, from 6:00AM~12:00PM. One news, runs from 18 hours, which I called it a re-run news. Nothing but useless news. February 10, 2012 Lucasnyc@ What a joke. The taxi driver was beaten senseless for doing his job and the police let the suspects go with less than $2000USD bail for aggravated assault? Seriously, the Taiwanese government is at fault here for not protecting its citizen and favoring foreign citizens. February 14, 2012 CURTISAKBAR@ Lucas you muppet, Makiyo is a Taiwanese citizen. So are you just talking about the Japanese guy? Should he be locked up just because he doesn't have an ID card? Sounds a bit racist to me. | |||||||||||||
