Updated Tuesday, January 24, 2012 1:41 am TWN, DPP prepares for crucial election reviewThe opposition leaders, including incumbent Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen, the party's presidential candidate in the Jan. 14 election, are expected to engage in thorough discussions and attempt to map out new reforms and future development directions. Party officials said Tsai will present a report on Feb. 1 analyzing the inner and outer factors for the DPP's defeat in the presidential race, despite gains made by the party in the legislative election. DPP sources revealed that Tsai's report will cover various subjects including the party's election strategies, the mobilization of supporters and publicity campaigns. The outside factors to be reviewed will include Taiwan's general political and economic environments and policies across the Taiwan Strait as most business and industry leaders had voiced strong support for the policies of President Ma Ying-jeou and the ruling Kuomintang to cement closer business ties with China. Frank Hsieh, a former premier and a member of the DPP's Central Standing Committee, said it is necessary to have a sweeping review of the party's policies and strategies. He questioned the accuracy of the public opinion polls conducted by the party itself. He pointed out that Tsai suffered a defeat by a wide margin instead of winning 1 percentage point over Ma as forecast earlier by DPP strategist and pollsters. |
