Kaohsiung airport staff threaten strikeThe talks between the management of the Taiwan Airport Service Co. (TASC) and its Kaohsiung branch trade union, failed to arrive at any agreement on a 5-percent pay hike as demanded by the union. The TASC provides freight, aircraft cabin, passenger, ramp, and equipment maintenance services at Kaohsiung and other airports. Cheng Ying-sheng, head of the TASC Kaohsiung branch trade union, urged the management to deal with the dispute carefully in order to prevent a possible strike that would paralyze ground services at the Kaohsiung airport during the Lunar New Year holiday, usually a peak season for air transportation. This year's Lunar New Year holiday starts Jan. 21 and runs for nine days. TASC said the union's insistence on a 5-percent pay rise was the major factor that led to the failure of the talks. The company said it will hold a new round of labor-management negotiations Friday, and in case of strikes, it will send additional workers to Kaohsiung airport during the holiday in a bid to minimize the possible impact on the airport's ground services. | |||||||||||||
