Firecracker sound effect CDs to help ring in CNYIt has long been a tradition in Chinese society to set off firecrackers to celebrate the beginning of a new year. However, the firecrackers make a loud noise and the smoke produced causes air pollution, while the paper left behind also pollutes the environment, city officials said Tuesday. In an attempt to lessen the pollution, the city government has prepared firecracker sound effect CDs that people living in crowded urban areas can obtain free of charge if they want to have a festive atmosphere without disturbing their neighbors or polluting their communities, according to officials responsible for environmental protection affairs. The CDs are available from the Department of Environment Protection, or either by post or online from the website of the Cabinet-level Environment Protection Administration at http://ivyl.epa.gov.tw/noise/DD/D-01.htm, they said. | |||||||||||||
