Former first lady Wu implies Chen Chu censure

By Enru Lin--At her mother's official funeral service, former first lady Wu Shu-jen (吳淑珍) implied a rebuke of DPP heavyweights like Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chu (陳菊) for their fair-weather friendship.

Wu Wang Hsia (吳王霞) died of cardiopulmonary failure on Dec. 31. Her son-in-law, ex-President Chen Shui-bian, took leave Jan. 6 from Taipei Prison to pay respects on the “seventh day” of mourning.

In a comparatively low-key ritual yesterday, Wu Shu-jen said that “'Bian' reached out to so many, but now ...”

Wu was joined by close family and a handful of guests.

Immediate family included brother Wu Ching-mao (吳景茂), daughter Chen Hsing-yu (陳幸妤), son Chen Chih-chung (陳致中), and daughter-in-law Huang Juei-chien (黃睿覲). Son-in-law Chao Chien-ming (趙建銘) was not present

Guests were Greater Tainan Mayor William Lai (賴清德), former Magistrate of Tainan County Su Huan-chih (蘇煥智), and all five Democratic Progressive Party legislative candidates from Tainan County.

But otherwise, no key party players gathered to pay respects. Wu told local media that she cannot help but “lament.”

Said Wu, “The president (Chen) is truly too stupid, to have helped out so many, but now ...”

Kaohsiung Mayor Owes Chen Shui-bian: Wu

Wu underscored Kaohsiung's Chen Chu's “disloyalty.” “Chen Chu's election would have been impossible without the assistance of (Chen Shui-bian),” Wu told local media yesterday, following funeral rites.

Chen Chu recently electioneered for Chen Chih-chung's opponent Kuo Wen-cheng (郭玟成) in Kaohsiung's district 9.

“Whatever (Chen Chu) does, the people's hearts have the ruler to measure,” said Wu.

She continued, “Who is more excellent, Chen Chih-chung or Kuo Wen-cheng? The people's hearts have the ruler to measure.”

At the memorial service yesterday, Wu Shu-jen appeared pale and requested medication.

'To each his own': DPP

Speaking for DPP presidential candidate Tsai Ing-wen, Legislator Ker Chien-ming (柯建銘) told local media that Chen and Kuo are “two brothers mountaineering.”

“To each his own,” he continued.

Pursued for comment on the district race yesterday, Ker said he hopes that after the election, Chen Chih-chung and Kuo will remain brothers.

Kuo is Chen Chu's Responsibility

The family must respect the DPP party machinery — the DPP nominee is Chen Chu's responsibility, said city government spokesperson Lai Jui-lung (賴瑞隆) yesterday.

Lai continued by saying that Chen Chu paid respects the day after Wu Wang Hsia's death. She also dispatched a representative to convey condolences at the official funeral service.
