Asian divas to face off at Red White Superstar TV Concert

TAIPEI--An annual TV music show that divides pop singers into competing teams of red and white will be broadcast in Taiwan on Jan. 22, featuring big-name Asian stars in a battle for the winning title.

South Korean girl groups Wonder Girls and Miss A, Taiwan's pop divas A-mei and Elva Hsiao, singer Jam Hsiao, rock band Mayday and Japan's Kana Nishino were among the around 30 groups of pop artists invited to perform at the Red White Superstar concert.

The show was recorded Saturday, with the opening act of dancer Elva Hsiao performing “Miss Elva” and “I Love Me” for the red team. She faced off against South Korean boy band ZE:A, also known as Children of Empire.

Some 10,000 cheering fans attended the show, which is being produced by the Taiwan Television Enterprise (TTV) for the third year at an estimated cost of NT$30 million (US$992,555).

Jam Hsiao and Chinese armless pianist Liu Wei, who rose to fame after a performance on China's Got Talent, moved the audience with a piano duet of the Chinese love song “New Endless Love.”

Taiwanese singer and actress Ariel Lin and actor Wilson Chen, who gained popularity on the TV drama “In Time with You,” also stirred the crowd with their performances.

Chen, who said it is his first time playing with a band on stage, pounded away on his guitar and sang the theme song for “In Time with You” to a roaring crowd.

Members of the Wonder Girls said Friday at a press conference that they were happy to have the chance to perform on stage with Miss A and were not worried about being overshadowed.

The Superstar Concert mimics Japan's Red and White Song Battle that also pits artists against each other in red and white teams.

The concert, which was held at the Taipei Arena, is scheduled to be broadcast at 7 p.m. on Lunar New Year's Eve.
