Ma clashes with Tsai on national identity, democracyThe battle of words was renewed yesterday, immediately after the three presidential candidates' first televised campaign platform presentation aired on Friday. In an interview on the Broadcasting Corporation of China's (BCC) HiChannel radio station yesterday, Ma questioned Tsai's rationale behind her decision to run for president, accusing the DPP presidential candidate of a self-contradiction. “Does she want to become a president in exile, now that she is running?” Ma said, recalling Tsai's remark that the Republic of China is a government in exile, adding that if Tsai has no respect for the country and its constitution, she should not be running to become the country's president. “Why would anyone who could not care less about the Constitution run for president,” Ma said. Refuting Tsai's charges during the campaign platform presentations that Taiwan's 16 agreements with mainland China have been achieved at the expense of Taiwan's sovereignty, and that his re-election would mean Taiwan will be forced to face the question of eventual unification with China, Ma challenged Tsai to substantiate her claims. The text of “the agreements were all posted online” and none of the agreements fell foul of required procedures, Ma said, adding he would like to ask Chairwoman Tsai which of these 16 agreements has been achieved by sacrificing Taiwan's sovereignty. After a worship session in a church in Chiayi City, Tsai responded to Ma by accusing the ruling Kuomintang of using national identity as a campaign issue again. “Formidable challenges are what Taiwan is going to face next. If we continue to try and divide the nation and society, we will not have the strength to go forward,” the DPP chairwoman said. Citing democratization ranking information published by the Economist magazine, Tsai said Taiwan, ranked 32nd in 2006, was demoted to 36th in 2011 because the government was keeping an authoritarian mindset. “A government like this should go and get some rest,” she said. Not wanting to be left out in the cold, the People First Party (PFP) said yesterday it would lodge a complaint with the Chinese Television System and the Central Election Commission to take the two organization to task for not airing PFP Chairman James Song's press conference after the campaign platform presentations. According to a PFP spokesman, CTS yesterday did not even post on its website transcriptions of what Soong had said at the press conference. Comments December 26, 2011 ludahai_twn@ Reply Democracy on the decline during the KMT administration. This isn't exactly news. It is well-known to anyone in Taiwan with a brain over the past four years. December 26, 2011 there801@ TO ludahai twn@ shame on you December 26, 2011 edrulyn@ Corruptions and graft were rampant during the DPP administration. Even at present, corruptions by DPP members are in the news. December 26, 2011 mtsai16@ The truth goads the guilty into talk defensively. December 26, 2011 ludahai_twn@ there801 - shame for telling the truth? Welcome to the world called curbing of civil liberties... Don't take my word for it; look at what international watchdogs have to say... December 27, 2011 carltanong@ DPP’s definition of Democracy is "only a government of the DPP, by the DPP and for the DPP”. That is the true meaning of the DIRTIEST POLITICIAN PROFITEER.Miss Tsai and the DPPs’ definition of Identity is that they are NOT the citizens of "Republic of China, because it is a government in exile". But Miss Tsai changed her identity overnight by acknowledging R.O.China is Taiwan and Taiwan is Republic of China". WHY? Because without any identity how could SHE run for president of R.O.China that she DESIRES? December 27, 2011 jim@ mtsai16@ wrote: Both candidates sounded defensive. December 27, 2011 mtsai16@ @ CloggedwithgutsWith your statement, you might just have become the exceptional _______ (fill in your favorite seven-letter word here) in northern Taiwan. With a handle like yours, I now know where your fossilized stereotyping spurts from. I'm sure all that you've written will be forgotten; further, I'm sure you'll be forgiven for your pettiness. I once heard Martina Navratilova say on air that someone was having diarrhea of the mouth. Navratilova most likely forgot that she herself likes her opinions heard too. The lesson here is that we all should be mindful of this phrase when we talk or write. December 28, 2011 mtsai16@ @ jimMy statement applies to all living beings, even animals. Surely you've seen how a disobedient dog behaves in front of its master after being questioned, "Who did it?" December 29, 2011 hello@ carltanong@ wrote: Exactly!!! December 29, 2011 mike@ The only honest remark made in regards to Taiwanese politics was Chen's daughter when, in a fit of emotion, she screamed, "They all do it!"Not limited to: Politicians, political parties, police officers, fire fighters and school principles, not to mention doctors, pharmaceutical companies, insider trading in large companies, etc... Face it, Taiwan is little more than a banana republic when it comes to democracy, the judiciary system, government and drivers... DPP shenanigans and corruption aside, how is it that the KMT has over 8 billion USD in assets, ranking as the world's richest political party, and during the financial crunch of 08/09, when Warren Buffet lost his shirt, they still managed to rake in a profit approaching one billion USD? And, in light of their wealth, why do they need to fundraise to fund campaign activities? One would be really happier to put on a pair of rose colored glasses and not see what is going on in every level of Taiwanese society. Corruption happens everywhere in the world, but per capita, Taiwan should be ashamed. January 3, 2012 johnny.brian@ Simple question to ask if elected: Do you love ROC? If Yes, prove while Tsai is still a candidate by singing National Anthem and read aloud the "Three Principles". If No, arrest Tsai for treason, along with her officials for they are like cancer, making ROC Taiwan weak. January 3, 2012 edrulyn@ mike@ I agree with you. Very well stated.... January 9, 2012 tsaidinniya@ Let's [convict her] for blasphemy, lying & committing treason against the people of Taiwan. January 14, 2012 narawanda2000@ tsaidinniya @ let's beat her with a big stick so she remembers a woman's place and go take back the mainland! January 19, 2012 jchyz@ I would agree with Tsai and DPP members if they won't speak Mandarin, write Chinese characters, or Haka or Fujianese. DPP and Tsai only want to be independent for their own benefits, corrupt benefits. They are worse than Dalai Lama. | |||||||||||||
