Liu says sorry for wrong dates, denies conspiracy

Christina Liu (劉憶如), minister of the Council for Economic Planning and Development (CEPD) and convener of the National Development Fund (NDF), acknowledged yesterday the council had messed up the date on the TaiMed investment briefing provided to the Legislative Yuan. Liu apologized for the inconvenience it entailed although she did not address her apology to any specific person or party.

In her defense to the accusation by the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Liu stressed that there isn't any conspiracy involving the case, and the mistake is due to information overload of the case's related documents. Liu explained that the CEPD was under heavy time constraints to answer to the Legislative Yuan's public hearing summons and did not have sufficient time to verify each document. She called the time discrepancy a “minor mistake.”

To date, Liu has not provided any details or explanations as to the incorrect date stamped on the CEPD's TaiMed investment briefing that was provided to the Legislative Yuan.

The minister expressed her anger in response to the Democratic Progressive Party's accusation of her being the Kuomintang's hired gun and denied such allegations. She criticized the back-and-forth decision procedure on Yu Chang investment and urged that the policymakers of the case should speak out to sketch the full picture.

Liu stressed the Yu Chang investigation should focus on the legality of due process, whether Tsai Ing-wen violated the “Revolving Door Clause,” and if there was a conflict of interest. She added that the case has now spun out of control and is too much for her to handle and she is now considering resigning from her Cabinet position.

Wu Demands Tsai Answer Yu Chang Accusation

Premier Wu Den-yih told reporters yesterday that he will not consider Liu's informal resignation seriously. He elaborated that the Yu Chang allegation should not be clouded by the “time discrepancy.” It should center on the legality of Tsai's involvement. Wu said presidential candidate Tsai has not yet answered accusations and she is not off the hook.

KMT Lawmakers Suspect More Secret Documents

KMT legislative whip Lin Yi-shih (林益世) continued his attack on Tsai Ing-wen. He said he believes there is a final Yu Chang document still in the dark. Lin has demanded the CEPD provide that final document and for Tsai to voluntarily explain her involvement in the case.

Lin explained that if the final document does not exist it would indicate that the then-Vice Premier Tsai had authorized an investment that she later benefited from chairing the company.

He drew a metaphor comparing Tsai to a little girl holding onto candies yet not being able to explain where she got them, then beginning to cry as her defense. The purpose is to hide from the truth, he added.

In response to the CEPD date mistake, Lin said he will be leading the formation of a cross-party investigation committee to avoid any future mistakes.

KMT Legislator Hung Hsiu-chu (洪秀柱) said that Liu should stay in her Cabinet position, and what is important is Tsai Ing-wen's possible involvement in the case.

This is a presidential election campaign. In the campaign, the integrality and the wrongdoing of all candidates are under voters' scrutiny. People just want to know if Tsai was clean or corruptible in this case. If she used her high ranking profile to approve the foundation of the Yu Chang Co. on which she chaired later on and benefited from, she had very possible involvement in the case. The process of the authorization is much more important than the date mistake. She is disqualified for running presidential election.

antoniolin69 you do not understand the difference between slandering a person's reputation by fabricating stories (mudslinging) and due diligence in investigating corruption.

In the original document - there is no date stamp. In the document presented by Liu - there is a time stamp.

The question is - who placed that wrong time stamp on that document. Isn't that tantamount to forgery with the aim of destroy a Tsai's reputation?

(a) Don’t even try and refute it cos you know it's true, there isn't a single political party in Taiwan that is more corrupt that KMT. It is a historical and current fact.

(b) If KMT is not interested in building a democracy based on multi-party voices, then I suggest KMT return Taiwan to the single-party white terror period. Disqualifying Tsai? How about any sort of action against KMT for forging of documents? Oh I’m sorry, it was a mistake was it? Do you honestly think KMT would think otherwise if DPP was to produce documents mysteriously stamped with a different date? Grow up you immature spoilt brat.

Tsai is a thief and she is not even a president yet. I hope she won't be elected. Imagine, another corrupt leader - please.

The actions of the KMT during this entire campaign are worse than despicable. It is painfully obvious that the KMT has no love of the democratic process. They want everything for themselves and don't care about providing a fair choice for the people. The KMT doesn't deserve to operate in a democratic country. Administrative neutrality? Judicial neutrality? Integrity? These are just words and phrases that have no meaning to them, as evidenced by their behavior over the past two months...

Some people here are using the democratic process to shroud and protect a certain presidential candidate’s wrong doings. That is undemocratic.

The DPP was vividly clear enriching themselves since they took power in 2000, because the DPP’s sweet manner and words can please the mind and feelings of the people and deceive them subsequently.

The people have the right to know what really transpired in these sensational scandals before they cast their sacred ballot.
