Taiwan, United States talk counter-piracy cooperation

TAIPEI -- Officials from the United States were in Taiwan this week to discuss counter-piracy measures, the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) said Friday.

“The two sides held constructive and wide-ranging discussions on the problem of piracy at sea and on ways to expand our counter-piracy cooperation,” according to a press statement issued by the AIT.

Asked if any agreements were made during the two-day visit, AIT spokesman Christopher Kavanagh told the CNA that it was the first time a U.S. delegation was visiting Taiwan for such discussions and that no concrete projects were in the works.

The delegation, composed of members of the U.S. Department of State and Department of Defense, was led by Donna Hopkins, coordinator of the Counter Piracy and Maritime Security in the Bureau of Political-Military Affairs.

The delegation called on representatives from Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of National Defense, Ministry of Transportation, Coast Guard Headquarters, and Fisheries Bureau. The AIT represents the U.S. interests in Taiwan in the absence of formal diplomatic ties.
