US memorial service to honor former Tourism Bureau chief

Yu died on Sep. 26. He was 92.

The longest-serving director-general of the Tourism Bureau (from April 1980 till March 1988) in its 40-year history, Yu played an instrumental role in modernizing the country's tourism industry by revising and updating the country's tourism regulations.

Another well-known policy initiative of the Tourism Bureau when Yu was director generation was the requirement that tourist agencies give their customs a pre-trip briefing. Yu also directed the establishment of tourist service centers in various parts of the country and called for better training for tour guides.

An air force officer before he joined the Government Information Office (GIO) and the Tourism Bureau, Yu had wanted to spend his remaining years in Taiwan, but was prevented from flying because of his frailty. He was once the GIO's representative in Austria.

Janice Lai Seh-jen, current director general of the Tourism Bureau, and two of her predecessors, were Yu's subordinates when he was director-general.
