MAC official cites China military actions as barrierMainland Affairs Council (MAC) Minister Lai Shin yuan said during a meeting with Taiwanese expatriates in San Francisco that a true reconciliation across the Taiwan Strait should not involve any political preconditions, and she hoped China would initiate moves to eliminate the obstacle. Doing so would deepen the development of the cross-Taiwan Strait relationship, establish mutual trust and turn a new page of cross-strait peace through rapprochement, she said. Meanwhile, she criticized opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) chairwoman and presidential candidate Tsai Ing-wen for her opposition to the “1992 consensus,” saying the denial would deprive Taiwan of the basis for defending its sovereignty during exchanges with China. Lai said that supporting the consensus underpinned the idea that the Republic of China is an independent, self-governed country. | |||||||||||||
